Sustainable Catalyst Foundations

Foundations

Institutional standards, living documentation, public commitments, product architecture, methodology, policies, and historical records for the Sustainable Catalyst open knowledge institution.

Foundations preserves the principles and documentation needed to keep the Institution, Open Knowledge Library, Sustainable Catalyst Lab, Platform, public products, repositories, and applied work coherent, reviewable, version-aware, and open to correction.

Foundational principle: documentation should identify what is current, what is
authoritative, what has changed, what remains uncertain, and where a reader can inspect the source,
method, repository, release record, or historical snapshot.

The standards and documentation layer behind the public work

Sustainable Catalyst now extends across research, publishing, scientific and engineering investigation,
public observatories, analytical tools, decision support, open-source software, and governed public
participation. Foundations keeps those activities connected to a shared institutional record.

Define

State the institution’s purpose and commitments

Record the mission, public purpose, identity, ethical commitments, voice, visual standards,
sustainability principles, and boundaries that guide the work.

Document

Explain how products and methods work

Connect current product pages, repository documentation, methodology records, architecture notes,
schemas, release records, policies, and downloadable snapshots.

Govern

Preserve authority, review state, and history

Distinguish living documentation from PDF snapshots, drafts, superseded records, archives,
release-specific behavior, and material awaiting review.

Search the living documentation library

Search institutional, brand, Library, Lab, Platform, product, architecture, methodology, trust,
policy, licensing, release, PDF snapshot, and historical records. Expand a record to inspect its
authority, version, responsible area, review state, relationships, dependencies, and available actions.

Current records first.

Archived and superseded material is excluded by default but can be included from the documentation
filters when historical context is needed.

Documentation records

Foundations documentation

Twelve curated areas in one Foundations collection

The Foundations collection uses the Library’s documentation taxonomy so visitors can search broadly
or narrow the knowledge base to the institutional area relevant to their question.

Identity

Institutional Foundations

Institutional purpose, operating model, stewardship, independence, public value, and foundational standards.

Brand

Brand and Identity

Brand pillars, manifesto, voice, tone, visual standards, logo use, and presentation guidance.

Positioning

Mission and Positioning

Mission, vision, public meaning, sustainability commitments, solidarity, and institutional positioning.

Knowledge system

Library Documentation

Registry, planning, collections, workspaces, annotations, books, relationships, portability, and release coordination.

Investigation

Lab Documentation

Scientific notebooks, experiments, methods, instrumentation, calculations, validation, and reproducible research workflows.

Public infrastructure

Platform Documentation

Research Librarian, Site Intelligence, Workbench, Decision Studio, Platform Core, integrations, and public interfaces.

Products

Product Briefs

Current and historical product overviews, module descriptions, use cases, capabilities, and public boundaries.

Systems

Architecture

Service relationships, data contracts, schemas, evidence flow, product handoffs, and system-level diagrams.

Methods

Methodology and Trust

Source rules, comparison boundaries, validation standards, AI limits, auditability, uncertainty, and responsible use.

Governance

Policies and Licensing

Privacy, terms, disclaimers, open-source notices, licensing, attribution, data handling, and public-use boundaries.

Change

Release Documentation

Release notes, migrations, version changes, compatibility information, known issues, and current implementation state.

Memory

Historical and Archived

Superseded briefs, earlier architecture snapshots, retired policies, deprecated methods, and preserved PDF records.

Different records govern different kinds of truth

A polished PDF, a current webpage, a repository README, and a release record do not serve the same
purpose. The documentation knowledge base identifies which source should govern the current question.

Institution and products

Current public webpage

The current Institution, Library, Lab, Platform, product, or methodology page governs public description and positioning.

Technical behavior

Repository documentation

Versioned source, README files, schemas, tests, implementation notes, and setup documentation govern technical behavior.

Methods and boundaries

Methodology page

Current source, comparison, validation, AI, uncertainty, review, and responsible-use rules govern interpretation.

Current release

Repository release record

Release notes, commits, migration instructions, health records, and version markers govern implementation state.

Brand or policy snapshot

Published PDF

A published PDF may remain authoritative when it is the approved fixed statement, policy, or brand artifact.

Historical interpretation

Archived document

Archived PDFs and superseded records preserve institutional history without being presented as current guidance.

Living documentationContinuously maintained current reference
CurrentApproved and in force
PDF snapshotFixed publication at a point in time
DraftNot final or authoritative
SupersededReplaced by a newer record
ArchivedRetained for history or audit

Commitments that apply across the institution

These standards connect research, publishing, software, scientific work, public evidence,
calculation, participation, and decision support to a shared institutional method.

AI in the toolkit, never in control.

AI may assist routing, analysis, drafting, classification, translation, and synthesis, but accountable human judgment remains necessary.

Claims should remain traceable.

Sources, assumptions, transformations, calculations, uncertainty, interpretation, and unresolved gaps should remain visible.

Methods should be explainable.

Tools, dashboards, experiments, comparisons, models, routes, and decision workflows should expose reviewable operating logic.

Knowledge should be reusable.

Publications, records, datasets, code, schemas, notebooks, and exports should connect rather than remain isolated outputs.

Status and freshness should be visible.

Living, current, draft, stale, unavailable, superseded, archived, experimental, and release-specific states should not be confused.

Consequential use requires qualified review.

Educational and analytical tools do not replace current authoritative records, field investigation, certification, or professional judgment.

The Library preserves, the Lab investigates, and the Platform connects

Foundations documents the relationship among the three major institutional environments and the
products, services, records, and public workflows that operate within them.

Create, review, publish, supersede, preserve, and correct

The Foundations knowledge base is designed as a maintained institutional registry rather than a
static download page.

  1. 01Create

Define purpose, scope, responsible area, document type, and intended authority.

  2. 02Connect

Assign the Foundations collection, documentation category, related records, and dependencies.

  3. 03Review

Check content, source links, authority, version, status, review date, and public boundaries.

  4. 04Publish

Expose the current record through the documentation knowledge base and appropriate source.

  5. 05Supersede

Identify the replacement when a newer page, release, policy, method, or brief takes authority.

  6. 06Preserve

Retain historically useful snapshots without allowing them to appear current.

  7. 07Correct

Accept reports of wrong links, stale records, unclear authority, documentation gaps, and needed revisions.

  8. 08Revalidate

Use review intervals and release coordination to keep the documentation registry current.

Policies, methodology, licensing, and correction routes

Foundations connects institutional commitments to the public records that govern use, interpretation,
privacy, licensing, source handling, professional boundaries, and improvement.

Methods

Platform Methodology

Documentation does not create automatic authority.

A record’s presence in the knowledge base does not prove factual accuracy, legal validity,
professional suitability, scientific correctness, regulatory compliance, or current implementation
state. The authority label, source, status, version, review date, and responsible-use boundaries must
be considered together.

Move from institutional standards into the working knowledge system

Search the documentation registry, inspect the current authoritative source, explore the Institution,
continue into the Library, investigate in the Lab, or use the Platform’s public products and workflows.
